Sugar Cookies

Sugar Cookies:

  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1½ tsp baking powder
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add egg and vanilla and mix until combined.
  4. Add the remaining dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Your dough will come together into big chunks; dump it out and use your hands to form one ball of dough.
  5. On a floured surface, roll the dough to about ¼ inch thickness and cut into desired shapes. Place cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, placing cookies an inch apart.
  6. Bake for 9-12 minutes, until cookies are juuust starting to brown at the edges. Let cookies cool completely before decorating (see Note below).
  7. Yield: 15 large cookies

Note: I use the Wilton royal icing recipe to decorate my cookies and I highly recommend! The sky is truly the limit when it comes to how you can decorate sugar cookies- they’re the perfect blank canvas 🙂
